Press Release Summary: March 16, 2008 - Toronto, Canada - Christopher Iles, an honorary speaker at the 2008 Government Technologies Conference and Expo, will be presenting on the REACH project and other related Tele-health projects performed by Communications Research Centre (CRC), the Canadian Government's primary laboratory for research and development in advanced telecommunications. Christopher Iles is Project Leader, satellite Communication and Radio Propagation, CRC. The fifth annual conference is the most anticipated Government event, being hosted at the Design Exchange on April 15 - 16, 2008.
The CRC is the Canadian Government's primary laboratory for research and development in advanced telecommunications and is at the forefront of research activities and trials being conducted for the delivery of Tele-health services via satellite. As Canadian demand for healthcare increases, adoption of Tele-health services and systems can be a powerful tool to assure high quality medical care for all people, and in many cases at reduced cost and with faster response time. Extending the reach of ground infrastructure, satellite-based Tele-health applications have the potential to reach every Canadian, regardless of their location.
From the air-ambulance service, to remote community medical centers in the northern regions, and more recently with homecare services directly into the patient's house, CRC's technology has helped the medical community to reach its client faster and at lower cost.
The presentation will show how these services have helped the patients and the medical community and will elaborate on the expected performance. The presentation will dwell longer on the Remote Assertive Community Homecare (REACH) experiment which aimed at offering remote medical monitoring to severe mentally handicapped people. These patients could stay in the comfort of their home instead of being hospitalized. With the system, a significant number of travel visits to patient's homes are being substituted for teleconference visits, thereby reducing the time, cost and risk involved in travel. The presentation will discuss the benefits, drawbacks and lessons learned from this project.
Government officers, and especially medical executives, will learn about different Tele-health technologies to reach patients via satellite links. From air ambulance services to remote medical community centre and homecare services, the presentation will present the benefits and lessons learn. It will also be an opportunity to establish contacts with CRC for collaboration or information sharing.
